Sadly, with the demise of the popular 1360 KLSD *( which was replaced by another
much needed sports talk show),
San Diego is without a 'Liberal-Progressive'
*( truthful alternative point of view radio station). I
recently received this in an email.
It kind of sums it up!
Periodically, at a restaurant
or store, I run into perfect strangers, who somehow recognize meand ask the inevitable
question "Are you back on the radio?" I get a load of emails as well
asking the same question. The simple answer is "no", but as some of
you know, I've been connected with an outfit called Liberty One Media that's been
trying to raise money to get a "progressive" radio station off the ground
here in San Diego. Hell, I'm even listed on the website ( http://www.libertyonemedia.com/L1lineupweekdays.html)
as the "tentative" afternoon talk show host. Others, like Randi Rhodes
and Ed Shultz, are listed as "pending". Since both words mean basically
the same thing, I'm not sure what the distinction is, but I'm guessing that "pending"
means "free show" (syndicated), and "tentative" means "this
guy actually wants money" (me). In reality, the whole enterprise is tentative
as I haven't heard a word from these guys in a couple of months, as well-meaning
and sincere as they seem to be.
A couple of other dreamers have contacted
lately, also with too-good-to be-true "tentative" offers of tv shows
and radio gigs. One thing all these people seem to have in common is that they
have no money and are hoping someone will give them some. Bad timing, I'm guessing,
given the economy and all.
Another reality is the sorry-assed state of radio
and media in general here in San Diego, where the hosts of 3 popular long-running
radio shows have found themselves out of work in just the past couple of months.
Meanwhile, long time local television personalities like Loren Nancarrow, Pat
Brown, and Jim Stone are also suddenly unemployed. So far, the only one to re-surface
is the un-listenable crypto-fascist Mike Esparza of the "Mikey Show"
who, on his website, lists " Collecting Bibles", and "the New Testament",
along with "Cars!" among his hobbies. That, along with endless discussions
of innane reality tv and karaoke, pretty much describes "The Mikey Show".
But I can't blame Mikey for being bad, anymore than I can blame Michael Savage
for being a self-loathing neurotic or blaming Roger Hedgecock for being a tool
of the Republican Party, or blaming Rick Roberts for being a droning boob, or
blaming water for being wet. It's not really their fault; that's just what they
are. It's even hard to blame the unimaginative radio toadies who have kept them
employed. To quote Shakespeare: "The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our
stars, but in ourselves." If San Diegans embrace mediocrity, then mediocrity
is what they will get. A good case in point is our local newspaper, the vile and
simple-minded Union-Tribune, that consistent voice for the status quo and fearless
champion of the establishment. (Thankfully, the internet and the economy has crippled
the newspaper industry and the U.T. has now been reduced to a mere 4 or 5 daily
pages of misinfomation and outright lies.)
The net result of this doltish
media lunacy, for example, is that just yesterday in El Cajon 1000 souls showed
up for a "tea party" rally, where people bonded by their selective memories,
general ignorance, and love of Sarah Palin, indulged themselves for hours listening
to a string of local Republican hacks and climate change deniers.
I'd love
to think that 1000 or 10,000, or even 100,000 people will rally to demand a little
more from the local media cabal, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for that.
We San Diegans pride ourselves on our complacancy and as long as it's sunny and
75, the masses are pretty content with leaving well enough alone. But if you can
think of something, let me know.
On a brighter note, my 2 websites, www.stacytaylor.com
and www.sandiegotalks.com are nearly
back up and running. They are currently being redesigned by a local web outfit,
and within a few days I'll have a more polished and professional platform from
which to vent my rage and give my unsolicited opinions. And you will as well.
It is the "new media", afterall, and it will eventually replace the
decaying relics described above. I have big plans for daily blogs and podcasts
to provide an alternative to the dimwitted rubbish that passes for local media.
I will keep you posted. Feedback is welcome.
